Will Sora Replace Filmmakers and Video Creators?
A couple of weeks back, OpenAI left us all speechless with a demo of Sora, their new AI that turns text into stunning videos in seconds. If you've caught the demos, you know Sora's magic - cinematic clips up to a minute long, sometimes even crafting full trailers. I still remember watching the first demo, feeling a whirlwind of awe, inspiration, and a hint of fear.
So, the big question: Is Sora going to replace us creatives in video and filmmaking? Here's where I stand.
For those new here, I juggle a production company and a media business focused on educational content, all while diving deep into AI for a year. Mixed feelings? Absolutely.
Tyler Perry recently paused a huge studio project due to Sora, despite it just being a demo phase. This move, echoed by many in our industry, signals a massive shift. Yet, I see it differently - a golden opportunity.
Rewind to 2007, the DSLR revolution was kicking off. Many old-school photographers dismissed it, much to their later regret. I saw the change coming and leveraged it to build a successful production company. Fast forward, and AI, especially with tools like Sora, is poised to shake things up even more.
I've shifted gears, focusing on Generative AI with my new venture, Skill Leap AI, and even exploring AI to bring my film ideas to life. For anyone in video creation, this isn't just a challenge; it's an unprecedented chance to reinvent and stand out.
Here's my take:
AI could democratize filmmaking, making storytelling and production more accessible than ever. I've started using AI for film pitches and believe we're close to blending AI with live-action seamlessly.
For my company, AI opens up innovative services for clients. It's not just about the video; it's the impact that matters, and AI can help us deliver that in new ways.
For creatives, now's the time to master AI tools, integrating them with your skills. Remember when the Canon 5D made cinematic video affordable? Or the early days of Facebook ads? AI is our new frontier.
So, to my friends panicking over Sora, see this as a fresh start, an opportunity to do what was once impossible. Let's embrace this shift and make the most of it.

How to Charge More for Video Shoots
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
I found a simple way to charge four to ten times for video shoots. Several years ago, as a hired director/DP, I was only making $3k for a $200k project. Why? Because I was several layers removed from the client. The client spent 200k to hire an ad agency who hired a production company who hired a freelance producer who hired me. So I decided to level up to the production company and get as clos...

I agree completely with your take on AI filmmaking. We're about to break the bottle neck to telling visual stories. Our future road block is the marketing game. But I have no doubt AI will eventually make that a level playing field. Exciting times if we embrace technology.

You're missing a few parts of the VBP equation that is causing you to think that it is harder than it is. 1. You don't ask prospects directly about value with the intention of charging them more. You ask them about value to understand the magnitude of the risk involved. These sorts of conversations also usually uncover much more relevant data about the project, which makes it much easier to actually resolve the problem for them. 2. If *you* are not comfortable talking about large sums of money, your prospect will pick up on that immediately. 3. You *always* start with paid discovery, that way you're not just some "stranger on the internet". This also makes it much easier to deeply understand the valuable problem. 4. VBP is not a license to print money. In your example about small business --- yes -- there is not much value there or value is unknown. This doesn't mean you cant use VBP for small businesses, but rather it reveals that most professional services projects done for small businesses are WILDLY unprofitable for the business. 5. You never guarantee results. You are not in full control of the problem, instead you discount for uncertainty. 6. Your projects do not have a "cost" to deliver. Your costs are fixed.

Once the market is oversaturated with boring content, it will only be the good storytellers that survive. To my limited knowledge, AI still doesn't have the ability to have a creative thought, it can only generate content by using what others have taught it. Time will certainly tell, and maybe I'm totally wrong.

I'm kinda 100% sure that even if I create 100 movies per day in the quality of Green Mile or Matrix or whatever, nobody won't know that they actually exist unless I spent hundreds of milions for marketing, and this is of course because those who have hundreds of milions to spent will make 100 Green Miles per day as well. Very soon everyone will face the brutal reality that there is no such thing as making any money without spending lots of money in the first place. The cost for any kind of creation process will drop to 0. Same as the cost for using the almighty calculator which runs on solar batteries.

The thing is, look at the style of that “animated” sora clip, it’s derived purely from the unique output of the digital animators since Pixar began, clearly. Yes, AI content is going to destroy all sort of creative professionals. But it’s all derivative of real artists, artists who have a body, who are mortal, who have a real embodied perspective on what it means to be a person just like this. Eventually when the AI outputs become stale (and they will) and derivative of their own output which they will inevitably consume (the data in the world which up until AI had been entirely unique is already becoming polluted with AI content), there will be a vacuum for content only a politically invested embodied person with a real perspective could generate. The AI produced content will become near worthless as it will cost nothing to produce (is not scarce) and the value will be in human generated content again. Of course, this will then be consumed by the AI’s to train them on, but I believe by this point there will be a clear distinction in law and in the markets between AI created and human created. Unfortunately all of the creative knowledge is going to die with the professionals who have been put out of business by AI between then and now in a mass cultural extinction event, but for sure something new will emerge from it. It’s going to be wild and dystopian living through it. To see so many creative peoples ruined is heartbreaking, to see all the value they generated cruelly sucked up by vast supercomputers is … well evil, that’s the only word I can think of to describe it. I also think there is going to be a mass revival of religion because of all of this, but that’s a whole other discussion. Thanks for the informed and thought provoking video sir.

You are very optimistic .. things are looking murky for those at the ground floor.. I also feel for those who are just starting to figure out the current system and actually making a decent living... I think we should not underestimate how many people are not in the position to pivot easily. If it was easy, way more people would be successful right now it's not even funny.. The problem with learning to combine CURrENT AI advancement with our ability is things are gonna be OBSOLETE at an even faster rate if we are to believe these developers of generative AI... By this logic , SORA will be OBSOLETE before it even gets off the ground, and hundreds of thousands of people just can't keep up... This is gonna be a trajedy of biblical proportions .

I work for a major studio in Burbank and I can tell you, without a doubt, what you just described is exactly where we are headed and gearing towards for major films and shows. And in our particular studio and the many endeavors and companies it owns, it’s going to change the industry faster than most can imagine. This is the biggest studio entertainment conglomerate and the other large studios in the area are also doing their due diligence. This is why I am breaking off on the side to get ahead of it from the private production company level. There is great opportunity ahead. Some of us will put our heads together and figure out the next wave of production. Many will give up and call it a day. Exciting and scary.
